Tips and Tools for Wildlife Painting

Top Tip: About your acrylic paints: Bob Ross brushes and paints are used, however water misable paints can also be used although they are “stickier”.  If trying to paint images from the Wonderful World of Painting Video Lessons in acrylic (especially land/seascapes) then extender will have to be used to keep some areas wet enough to blend. MORE TIPS and SAFETY

Wildlife Painting Checklist

1" BRUSH 
Used to cover your canvas, painting clouds, skies, water, mountains, trees, bushes, and other numerous effects. By having 2 of these brushes you'll save time washing and lessen the amount of paint used.

2" BLENDER 
Obtain soft, delicate, subtle areas, make misty areas, and creating soft backgrounds and smooth, silky fur and feathers.

#6 FINSHER
Designed for details such as the eyes and fur

FUR BRUSH
Good for larger areas where you want to create wispy fur overlapping lighter or darker areas

 

  • Tip: Use natural bristle brushes skip the nylon, polyester, etc. 
  • Tip: Avoid washing the brushes in soap and water! 
  • Tip: Clean your brushes with odorless thinner

3/4” Bristle
Apply the acrylic undercoating on animals as well as applying shadow areas when loaded dry/wet.

#8 Finisher 
Used for fur details.

1/2” Bristle
Apply the acrylic undercoating on animals as well as applying shadow areas when loaded dry/wet.

#2 Detail 
Wiskers and fine fur or details on birds feathers.

Paints for Landscapes and Seascapes

Other oil colours are added from the Floral and Land/seascape colours depending on the need.
